Postnatal Tuina is a type of TCM massage specifically designed for women after childbirth. It uses acupressure, meridian stimulation, and gentle manipulations to address the particular physical and mental issues that arise during the postpartum period. Tuina, unlike traditional massages, focuses on restoring the body’s natural balance, encouraging the body to heal quicker, and providing the mother ample support towards her journey into motherhood.
Childbirth can cause muscle strain and discomfort, particularly in the lower back, sacrum, and pelvis. Postnatal Tuina uses specific techniques to relieve muscular stiffness, reduce inflammation, and improve physical recovery.
In TCM, the smooth movement of Qi (vital energy) and blood is critical for overall wellness. Postnatal Tuina stimulates certain acupoints to boost circulation, assisting new moms in overcoming weariness, cold extremities, and postpartum weakness.
The uterus experiences considerable modifications following childbirth. Gentle abdominal treatments encourage uterine contractions, which aid in the expulsion of lochia for natural birth and allow the uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy size and posture.
Hormonal fluctuations after delivery might cause mood swings and sleep difficulties. Postnatal Tuina reduces anxiety, stress, and promotes peaceful sleep by balancing the body's internal systems.
Certain acupoint stimulations can help increase milk production by harmonising the body's Qi and blood flow. Techniques that target the breast tissue and related meridians can promote lactation and relieve symptoms such as engorgement.
Mothers who have had a natural birth (after 24 hours)
Mothers who have undergone a cesarean section (after wound healing, approximately 2 weeks post-surgery)
Mothers experiencing: Back or pelvic pain, Poor uterine involution, Edema, Low milk supply, Postpartum fatigue, Mood instability, Weakened immunity
For natural deliveries, gentle massage may begin after 24 hours. For C-sections, therapy should wait until the incision has healed (typically after 2 weeks).
On the contrary, targeted acupoint stimulation during postnatal massage may help increase milk supply and support lactation.
Most mothers benefit from 2 to 3 sessions per week, with 5 to 7 treatments per course. The exact frequency will depend on individual recovery status.
Massage is not advised within the first 24 hours after delivery, or if the mother is experiencing a high fever, severe anemia, active bleeding, or wound infection. These cases require medical clearance before beginning massage therapy.
It is important to stay warm before and after treatment, avoid cold exposure, and rest for at least 30 minutes post-session. Drinking nourishing warm herbal soups afterward may enhance the benefits. If you are breastfeeding, please inform the therapist in advance.
